Gotta A Feeling 33 Is Gonna Be A Good Year

HAPPY BIRTHDAY: BROOKE FERRIS

What can I say about the amazing Brooke Ferris? We've been friends for over 12 years, meeting as roommates @ 300 West 49th Strret in Manhattan. We instantaneously became fast friends and have shared more laughs than anyone I know. I'm presently in San Antonio celebrating her birthday....(and eating salsa). It's wonderful to feel apart of the family. :-)

Toffifay, You are my inspiration; a muse when I'm feeling creative and ready to tackle an artistic endeavor. You are my rock, my balance to look at a situation or an obstacle with an open eye and an open heart. You are my voice, a song that continues to to resonate through my ears and always leaves a smile on my face. And you are my best friend, a person whom I can trust, I can be myself & someone I love unconditionally. I feel like you have given me the best gift of all on your birthday....the gift of friendship. I love you and always will! :-)

20th Annual Easter Bonnet Competition

Although I didn't get to experience the entire Easter Bonnet Competition (hosted by Michael Cerveris & Victoria Clark) I wanted to report that the Solid Gold medley with Les Miz highlights was a little touch of perfection. Eden Espinoza and Mahogany lit up the stage. Loved it! My friend Anthony is a producer for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids and graced me with the tickets (THANK YOU!!!) If you haven't seen Broadway Bares, Gypsy of the Year or the Easter Bonnet Competition, I highly encourage you if you have the opportunity to buy tickets for one of these events because not only is it entertaining, but it for an amazing cause.

The Perfect Concert

Last night's concert was UNBELIEVABLE.....One of the top 5 best concerts I've ever seen. The music, the presentation (video and music combined) I wish I could bottle up the experience and carry it it with me. My favorite moment of the evening was the the finale of E.T.....so moving, so exciting, a touch of genius. I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to see two legends in action.

Rainy Days and Sundays

You've gotta love the rain in New York City for one reason only....it helps tame the pungent aroma that fills the streets of Manhattan....you know what I mean. For most of New Yorks finest citizens, life stops when the waterworks begin. LOL!! I luckily worked all day Saturday, attended my friend Nick & Greg's party directly following (can we say DRUNK?), and then improvisation on Sunday with Brooke and Shawn (Yes, Shawn joined in the festivities). As for tonight, I'm waiting in anticipation for John Williams to conduct @ Avery Fisher Hall with host Steven Speilberg and The New York Philharmonic, performing songs from the movies E.T, Schindler's List, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Jaws, Close Encounters, Psycho, etc., OMG....how awesome is that? I'll have the most attractive date in town...Dr. Day. :-)
Tomorrow night, I'm headed to San Antonio with Brooke and if I'm lucky I'll be eating chips & salsa all day long. I will be back in the city on Sunday afternoon. I'm looking forward to spending time with Brooke's parents as well as my first cats in NYC, Slyvester and Beanie. :-)

Joan

WATCH THIS VIDEO: ABBA VERSUS JOAN CRAWFORD

Lestat

In Two Words...an experience. Shawn and I saw the Broadway production of Lestat last night at the Palace Theatre in Times Square. Although the talent was amazing & the sets/lighting & costumes dazzled the audience, the story (plot), and more than half of the music sadly felt underwhelming. Highly Entertaining? Not really! I wanted more (even for comedic value), but seeing that so many other vampire musicals have failed (Dance of the Vampires, Dracula, etc) I wasn't enthusiastic that this would surpass my former expectations. I'm sad to admit that I enjoyed Ring of Fire (the Johnny Cash musical) more than I enjoyed this. Wow! My advice would be to save your money.

Tricia and the City

HAPPY BIRTHDAY: TRICIA WANG

Tricia & I met @ UC San Diego as classmates @ worked on several documentries/projects together. We became fast friends discovering we both had a very similar drive. I love Tricia for her quick witted way of thinking and for always attempting to try something new. (hence, we almost attended a Master's program together @ Dublin University in Ireland) Even after a small falling out, we pulled together and have reunited here in New York City (Brooklyn & Queens in the house).

I know you're in California visiting family, but I wanted you to know I was thinking about you on your birthday. I'm sad you're leaving in September, but I'm happy to know you're pursuing your dreams. Thank you for always being there for me (offering to take care of me if and when I was to have surgery). I'm grateful for your friendship and wish nothing but the best in life for you. You are amazing. Live a lovely day....

Maine Lobster, Clams, Romance, & The Coast

Yes, I'm still smiling.......can you blame me? After spending time in Portsmouth, Dover & Durham (New Hampshire), as well as Ogunquit, Kittery, York, Kennebunkport, Kennebunk, Wells, Old Orchard Beach & Biddeford/Saco (Maine) I feel well rested, well fed, and lucky to have experienced this romantic getaway with such a great guy (sorry for the Velveeta factor). I encourage all of you to get out there and experience the East Coast, especially the coastal towns.

Thursday (4/13) Shawn picked me up in Union Square, NYC (INSANITY). NJ would have been an easier starting point, however my music director from high school was in town and this was the only opportunity to see him. OY! FYI...Shawn encouraged it so I had full support. :-) After leaving the ridiculous NY traffic scene (I believe the Yankees caused the congestion) we made our way through Connecticut, Massachusetts, and finally to our hotel a little after Midnight in NH. We were greeted by Norman Bates (this man was CREEPY) and proceeded to bed.

Friday (4/14) We made our way to Dover/Durham, home of the University of New Hampshire. Shawn let me drive..... it's quite liberating when you haven't done it for awhile (especially a stick). I'm glad he trusted me. :-) Shawn reminisced over his undergraduate years as we drove (and walked) around the campus. We stopped at one of his favorite hangouts (Acorns) for the buffet (one of my favorite things in the whole world). :-) The restaurant was awesome...it had these amazingly large windows and a fireplace. It made you feel like you were eating practically in the woods.....I loved it!! Afterwards, we ended up getting a haircut from A Nu Du, then shortly after met up with Shawn's buddy Matt in Portsmouth. WOW!!!! PORTSMOUTH IS AMAZING!!!! Please Visit!!! We wandered around, explored the town (Strawberry Banke Museum, Downtown, etc), I bought handcuffs......hehe. We thankfully had perfect weather...the highlight was steamed mussels at the Old Fairy Landing with outdoor seating near the harbor (I know...the name is out there), and a Smuttynose beer to wash it down. Aw, paradise.

Next stop....Kittery Maine (The outlet center). I was VERY happy (J Crew, Sketchers, Gap, Banana Republic, Calvin Klein & Old Navy). Need I say more....Yes...BIG SALE, BARGAINS, A JEW'S DREAM!!!! After successfully shopping we said our goodbyes to Matt and headed to Ogunquit (Meadowmere Resort). The Meadowmere has an indoor/outdoor pool, outside hot tub, a roman spa(inside), movie theater, a full gym, a pub if you want to have a drink and relax. It also has all these little sitting areas for you to sit and read or just have a nice conversation or just sit. Very quaint! It's only a short walk to the beach, downtown, and to Perkins Cove. After exploring the room for a bit (teehee) we made our way to town. We stumbled upon this quaint little French/Mediterranean restaurant called 98 Provence. Without a doubt, one of my top 5 favorite dining experiences ever. Something about the building, the grounds, the sign itself, just looked right. We pulled into the driveway. Yes, they could seat us without reservations, and we knew we were lucky. We just didn't know how lucky. We started off with a bottle of French Pinot Noir (the name is eluding me for the moment) and an appetizer that consisted of an artichoke heart and scallops with almond pistou accompanied by dinner which was a Veal mignon with wild mushroom port sauce & Halibut with salmon caviar-chive beurre blanc. UNBELIEVABLE! For me, it was one of the most romantic, charming, flavorable experiences I've had the opportunity to write about. We then returned to the resort, enjoyed quality time in the hot tub, and shortly after, happily fell asleep in each other's arms.

Saturday (4/15) We woke up to a foggy morning and made our way to the Amore Cafe. HAPPINESS.....another cute and quaint Ogunquit find...Adorable! After we stuffed out faces with cream cheese filled French toast & eggs benedict with corn beef hash we headed to town, shopped, and strolled along the Marginal Way (a walk along the coast of Maine) all the way to Perkins Cove. It was beautiful because the fog had lifted and the sun was shining. It was there we stopped at Barnacle Billy's for a bowl of Clam Chowder and a pound of long neck steamed clams. YUM!!! Moments later we then stopped at the Lobster Shack (footsteps away) and enjoyed another pound of long neck steamed clams. OINK!!! We spent a little more time taking pictures, holding hands, and enjoying Ogunquit. Afterwards, we explored many of the surrounding areas listed above (LOVED Kennebunkport..SO CUTE...Shawn bought me a Teddy bear & Big Fat Llama Merlot). When the sun started to set we headed back to the resort, opened the wine, headed to the hot tub, and relaxed. It's liberating to by gay (in a gay friendly resort) & feel so comfortable in your skin. It's a bonus to spend it with someone you adore. We went back to the room, dressed to impress, and headed to town, enjoyed Lobster Rolls at The Atlantic Cafe & then hit the clubs downtown (Maine Street & InsideOut). We had a couple beers and danced for hours...we were in our own element. It had been a long time since I let my hair town (so to speak). Sometime after Midnight, we walked back to the Meadowmere, smiling effortlessly from the day.....Can you see why I'm still smiling?

Sunday 4/16 After waking up and dragging my ass to take a shower, I closed the door, opened my eyes and found an Easter basket with a purple bunny, lots of candy and a Hallmark greeting. OMG....so sweet and unexpected. GRIN!!! Shawn surprised me....awww!! The only sad part was it was time to checkout of the resort (tears). I loved being there. We went back to Cafe Amore (I tried a lobster omlette) for our Ogunquit goodbye and then took a scenic route through York, stopping at Cape Neddick, enjoying the views of the ocean and the lighthouse. We drove back through Connecticut, switching to a scenic route through New York and New Jersey. Shawn's parents invited me to Easter dinner (which was wonderful). Directly after we went back to Forest Hills, watched Funny Girl (don't laugh...Shawn was a virgin) and went to bed around 11pm.

Finding happiness is like finding yourself. Thank you Shawn for making it easy. :-)

New Hampshire/Maine Bound

I'm REALLY looking forward to getting away this weekend. Shawn and I are escaping the clutches of NY/NJ and headed to a more peaceful location. We're headed out tonight (After having dinner with Rich Schraier) We're staying in Portsmouth, NH for the evening. In the morning, the plan is to venture to the University of New Hampshire in Durham/Dover area (where Shawn studied for his undergrad). Directly following we'll be headed to Ogunquit, Maine. It might be a temptation to stop in Kittery merely to shop the outlets...it's been awhile. The rest of the time I hope to drown myself in fresh seafood (clams...YUM) and since we're staying in a resort, rest and relaxation. :-) That's a stretch, but it's worth a try. I will give a full report upon my return. Mazeltov!!! Happy Passover/Easter/or simply have a wonderful weekend.

GMC, El Coyote, Schraier, & Uptown

Saturday: I attended "You oughta Be In Pictures" at Lincoln Center with the New York City Gay Men's Chorus (I'm formally taking a leave of absence until September). I was happily accompanied by Shawn...the perfect date! :-) It's wonderful to have connections with the box office...I was given amazing seats in the orchestra. Guest stars included Kitty Carlisle Hart (Joan Rivers replaced her), Olympia Dukakis (out sick), Karen Ziemba, & Claudia Waite. Favorites included "When you Wish Upon a Star" & "What's Opera, Doc?" (Bugs Bunny's Kill The Rabbit ). It was kind of strange not being apart of the chorus for this concert, but it was also a pleasure watching from the audience perspective. There is a chance I will be apart of the June concert.....time will tell. :-) I find my schedule is packed with extracurricular activities so I am limited. OY!!!

Sunday: I was fortunate to see my best buds in NYC, Dan, Alicia & Brooke Ferris at El Coyote in Jamaica. Always a pleasure. Sadly, everyone was really late so I had 3 helpings of chips and salsa. hehe I KNOW, I'm soooooo predictable. My taste buds were VERY happy. Alicia, I wish you'd let down the wall you've built so finely once in awhile....I love you and I want you to be a happy.

Monday: After work, I was fortunate meet up with my high school music director Richard Schraier for dinner @ Bombay Masala (The oldest Indian restaurant in Manhattan). He visits NYC every year from Los Angeles right around his birthday. He's an avid theatergoer so I know our time is mainly lunch or dinner. I was able to bring Shawn along so he could get a sense of my history. :-) I'm hoping I'll get so see him tonight before heading off to New Hampshire/Maine for the 3 day weekend. I'm very grateful to have him in my life. Hopefully I'll get to see him when I finally organize a trip to LA. :-)

Lastly, Uptown Express is slowly getting ready for our big performance at the Symphony Space on the Upper West Side. We had rehearsal last night and judging by the music and the talent, I think we have a good show ahead of us. I'm excited that Mario Cantone is hosting. :-)

New York Mets: Shea Stadium

Believe it or not, I'm going to see the Mets play the Marlins at Shea Stadium tonight (and it was my idea). That's right, never judge a gay man by his musical theatre resume! LOL!! Can you believe I watched Shawn play football last week and now I'm taking on Baseball. I have to say I'm kind of liking this new adventurous side. :-) I'm looking forward to eating a hot dog in the stadium, singing "Take Me out To the Old Ball Game" and holding hands with Shawn in front of all the straight, hardcore sports fans....awww, good times!

Idol...

For those of you who have invested apart of your life watching American Idol it can be rather frustrating trying to figure out the logic behind America's voting preference. Every season America is blessed with one or two "singers" who suprisingly soar through the competition and not for their talent, but because of popularity. Think Midwest (no offense). Example: Season 3 contestant John Stevens, Season 4 contestant Scott Savol and this season Bucky Covington. Trust me...no disrespect, but if these guys are the best talent in the USA, then America's standards makes me sad. Mandisa (although rumored to have made homophobic remarks in an interview) should've pushed forward based on talent while Ace, Kevin never should have made it to Hollywood.
ANYWAY.....my collegues and I are having an A.I. contest to see who can predict which person will be voted off every week.I was the closest, predicting that Mandisa would be in the bottom two. I now possess the tackiest, A.I trophy candle one could possibly stomach. It's INSANE! Oy!!

Happy Joy Joy

HAPPY BIRTHDAY: MARIANNE NEVITT
I met Marianne through best friend/ex-boyfriend Chris in San Diego while he was performing in West Side Story at the Welk Theatre. One thing I love about Marianne is her amazing spirit and her ability to pull you into a conversation. She's is an asset in my life and I'm grateful to have her as a close friend.

I hope you're performing well in Beauty and the Beast and that life is treating you well. I'm so proud of you and all your accomplishments. AND I'm soooooo happy you found true love with such a wonderful guy. Happy Birthday Marianne!! I love and miss you and can't wait to see you. You are truly a gem.

Meet The Parents.....

Happiness is having Shawn in my life.
Happiness is knowing he feels the same way I feel about him
And happiness is knowing he feels comfortable enough to introduce me to his family.
I met both of his parents, all of his brothers, sisters, sister in-laws, brother in-laws, brother in-law to be, nieces, nephews, etc. Believe it or not I wasn't overwhelmed by the intensity of meeting his family or gaining acceptance (more or less). Everyone (for the most part) was welcoming, very gracious and supportive. Carrie & Heather (his sisters) said that they we happy to see us together and that my nurturing mentality was a good balance for Shawn. It felt good to feel so comfortable so quickly. But again, Shawn just held my hand (even around of his parents) and treated me like a king.

And on Sunday, we went to the Bergen County Zoo which was wonderful. Yes, it's not San Diego, but it was cute and charming nevertheless. We enjoyed hanging out with his family and then made our way to the city for Shawn's football game. (YES, I said football and YES I cheered him on). Shawn must be special if I'm using football in my vocabulary. hehe He then drove me home and spent the night. It was an amazing weekend!
